For those unaware, Craig Owens of post-hardcore band Chiodos has a new electronic music project called badXchannels ; it seems that Owens took his post-hardcore sensibilities and applied them to electronic music, because this is about as post-EDM as you can get. He has a new song out today called “I Wanna Be Alone.” The song is characterized by Owens’ own vocals, both at the front and also in the background, modulated, chopped up, echoed endlessly. It’s a slow burn, meant more for live performance than something spun on CDJs; that’s also part of the brilliance of the badXchannels project. Owens debuted the project earlier this year at Asteria Music Festival in Florida, an intimate event and one to which only hundreds of fans were able to bear. Those in attendance, myself included, were treated to an emotional, one of a kind show from a seasoned performer exploring new territory. “I Wanna Be Alone” plays along the insecurities and depressive episodes that people are prone to face

The magic that is  Illenium x Halsey  has finally arrived. The producer’s remix of “ Without Me ” just dropped and it sounds as amazing as expected. Illenium’s signature style meshed with Halsey’s convicting lyrics makes for a dazzling production. The pop star’s original rocks an intentionally somber, dark beat. Thanks to Illenium’s vision, the track is refreshed from a new perspective and shined up around the edges for a bright, but still bittersweet result. Halsey’s mainstream hit “Without Me” currently sits at the No. 4 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and still appears to be climbing. Axwell just unleashed his latest, “Nobody Else.” The groovy single has already been making waves, ever since it debuted as BBC Radio 1’s “ Hottest Record ” last week. Whether it’s Swedish House Mafia we’re talking about, or their solo careers, timing is everything. In regards to this particular record, Axwell says it simply felt like the right time to release “Nobody Else.” The producer says this one reminds him of his older records, like “I Found You,” but it’s obviously presented in a fresh, new way. Today, Dutch duo DROELOE are rounding out their two-part tastemaking series, which kicked off last month with their Sem collab, “Facing The Sea.” L0ng time admirers of Fytch , DROELOE has now teamed up with the innovative French bass producer on new single “Through The Storm.” As usual when Fytch is on a track, his vocals shine brightly in that lustrous and unique fashion. The same could be said of the drop, which combines DROELOE’s aesthetic with Fytch’s crunchy and heavily modulated bass synths for a fantastic effect. And though not usually emphasized in EDM productions, the lyrics are just as poignant as the vocals are hypnotic. As Fytch explains, “‘Through The Storm’ is an Oath…a promise to always be a light when the storms of life obscure the view of the shoreline. Sometimes all that you need is one person to promise to keep shining a light. The definition of electronic dance music has shifted and grown over time. Now that pop music is primarily produced by either EDM DJs or producers, does it count? The jury is still out on that one. But Mickey Kojak is proving that funk and soul can be just as much EDM as your standard “everybody fucking jump” tune on the main stage. Kojak put out a new tune today called “Bones” that is exactly what I’m talking about. It’s ripe with acid synths and lush guitar licks, supplanted by a sultry vocal that sucks you in and makes you feel all good inside. It’s hard to believe that Odesza’s third album  A Moment Apart was released over a year ago. The duo has been touring so relentlessly that the album has hardly had a moment to leave our collective consciousness. And yet, it’s been 14 months since the album came out. Now, at the tail end of 2018, Odesza is gracing their fans (us included) with a brilliant deluxe edition of the album, featuring a couple VIP remixes, some reprisals, and instrumentals. The massive trap tune “Loyal” makes its own reprise on this deluxe edition after being released as a single earlier this year, as it leads off the second section on the deluxe. This is followed up by Odesza and Golden Feature’s VIP remix of “Memories That You Call” and Odesza’s VIP remix of “It’s Only,” which came out yesterday . The rest of the album consists of reprisals and instrumentals. Parish f/t  is former Cage the Elephant guitarist and now-producer Lincoln Parish’s solo project. Like so many projects that end up showing promise, Parish f/t was an accident – a musical lab experiment that worked. The project capitalizes on unintended results to great effect, bringing together a roster of featured vocalists where the sum is always greater than the parts. Noisestorm’s “Crab Rave” was released this year as an April Fool’s joke by Monstercat . The clearly tongue-in-cheek song and silly video are evidence enough of that, beyond the fact that it was released on April 1. However, the song developed a life of its own and it’s become a veritable meme that has spread farther than the label ever imagined. “Crab Rave” is the 14th most popular video across all of Monstercat’s YouTube channels, and the top video on its Instinct channel by more than 13 times. Between Pandora, Apple Music, Spotify, SoundCloud, hell, even Deezer and YouTube Music, the world is literally at our finger tips. The same can’t be said for much of the rest of the world. Earlier this month, Spotify expanded their global reach by opening up streaming to 13 countries in the Middle East and North Africa markets ( read here ). For the past two years, Electric Forest in Michigan has spanned two weekends. This is a testament to the popularity of the festival itself, as well as the sheer number of artists it brings each year. Next year, however, the festival will be returning to one weekend. In a statement posted to social media by the festival earlier today, it is explained: During the next year the Electric Forest grounds will see many exciting improvements that include upgraded landscapes, areas with new grass, and infrastructure improvements across the site. Most importantly, a new multi-year Sherwood Forest conservation plan will take effect. Protecting and curating the grounds of Electric Forest for generations to come is important to all of the Forest Family. The impact that comes with two weekends will need to be reduced for the new improvements to take hold. With conservation and longevity in mind, Electric Forest will be one magical weekend in 2019. Skrillex’s remix of “Sicko Mode” by Travis Scott finally –  finally – dropped this week, making it the third year running that Skrillex has had a major collaboration of some kind with a rapper (2016: Purple Lamborghini, 2017: Humble remix). Of the three, his “Sicko Mode” remix is by far the weakest, but that won’t stop bass DJs across the board from playing it out until our ears become numb to it. Both artists spoke with  Billboard about the remix and the process behind it. Skrillex admits it was a tough song to remix, with so many parts already embedded within it. For Scott, he wasn’t even aware that a remix was coming. “From my end, I saw a little video of him fucking around with it in the studio. I was like, ‘Damn, this shit is fire.’ I didn’t even know if he was going to drop it or not,” Scott shared with  Billboard . OOdesza yesterday teased a deluxe edition of their third album  A Moment Apart with a beautiful video. Today, we get the VIP remix of their song “It’s Only” with Zyra and and absolutely brilliant. The “It’s Only” VIP puts a much more tribal spin on the original, with emphasized studio production as opposed to live recording. The vocals get chopped and looped, pitched and thrown around. The drums are more wild and frenetic, but still retain Odesza’s signature beautiful melodies and rhythm. As a blogger, I get send plenty of music early, including Deadbeat’s new compilation album coming out tomorrow. I can tell you right now that the 12 tracks are as glorious as you’ve probably dreamed, but one track in particular caught my attention and made me think, “I have to premiere this.” That track was “Lithos” by Australian artist SIPPY , which just so happens to be her debut original. In my opinion, the best tracks are ones that have a lot of call and response, a juxtaposition to present to listeners and defy expectations. “Lithos” begins with a sort of ancient chanting and melody, a soft and accessible beginning. It lures you in . Soon enough, though, you’re hit with the vox synths and an ominous looping bass that signifies something more sinister. The drop hits with the force of a sack of bricks to your chest – it’s simple in design but it gets the job done. It’s heavy and absolutely unforgiving. The lauded dark prince of techno, the French purveyor of indecent thoughts, is out now with a new song called “Reset” on Columbia Records. And better yet, it comes with an official music video. “Reset” the song is a dark and brooding, minimalistic house tune that rolls along without too many eccentricities nor embellishments. It simply is what it is. The video, on the other hand, is a little harder to decipher. It features actors as lookalikes for popular current rappers, like an obvious Tekashi 6ix9ine stand-in, and perhaps a less obvious Lil Peep doppelgänger. (Fun fact: it’s the same actor.)
