Bear Grillz is releasing his debut album  Demons in 2019, and you better get ready. Fans were rightfully a little taken aback by the album’s first single, “Demons” featuring RUNN. Not that it was anything but great, but we certainly weren’t expecting some future bass as a first single. However, you can breathe a sigh of relief, because the new single out now, “Flow,” is back to the bass, baby. “Flow” is a song that Bear Grillz hoped “would get people shuffling and head banging in the same song,” and it’s safe to say he’s hit the mark. It starts off with a 180 BPM hardcore jaunt, then down to a 140 dubstep section before switching up the flow a bit to keep things even more interesting. After a brief bridge, it’s back to the madness. If nothing else, we know that  Demons is going to have more than just the hard dubstep that Bear Grillz is known for; and there’s nothing wrong with a little bit of variety! Christmas came a little late as label Wakaan at last announced its own music festival for 2019 at the end of last year. Details were scarce, aside from the date: October 3-6, 2019. Today, label founder Liquid Stranger announced the location: Mulberry Mountain in Arkansas . There are select few other music festivals that take place at Mulberry Mountain, including Backwoods and Wakarusa, so this will definitely be a destination festival for many, much like Lost Lands (which, if you’re paying attention, is just the previous weekend). Marshmello’s concert within Fortnite will probably be looked back on as a watershed moment in the marketing world for music. Following the event, Marshmello experienced a massive increase in engagement, views, and plays across social media and streaming platforms, proving that a dedicated fanbase is a very powerful tool. Circus Records turns 10 years old this year, and what a wild ride it has been. In celebration of the 10 year anniversary of one of the most celebrated bass labels in the history of dance music, various artists have been putting out new originals and remixes to highlight the occasion. Out yesterday is a new one from Chime , remixing “Bulletproof” from Doctor P . The original appeared on Doctor P’s debut EP,  Animal Vegetable Mineral Pt. 1 (there was no Pt 2), released in 2012. It was released during what some might call the golden era of brostep, full of lush melodies and chaotic, synth-driven basslines; and Doctor P’s style was one of the era’s best examples. Now, seven years later, and “Bulletproof” is given a new breath of life from Chime. And perhaps the greatest thing about the remix is how closely Chime manages to stick to the source material and the  vibe of 2012. Out March 15 on Netflix is the new series “Turn Up Charlie” starring Idris Elba , Piper Perabo, and JJ Feild. The synopsis for the video reads, “Turn Up Charlie follows a down-and-out DJ who plots to rebuild his music career whilst working as a nanny for his famous best friend’s wild 11 year old daughter.” While that may sound like quite the obnoxious Disney-channel-meets-millennial plot for a Netflix series ever, the trailer below should help put your mind at ease. Perabo and Elba are seasoned actors and their skill more than makes up for the shaky premise. The writing is also quick and witty, and doesn’t dwell too much on  We Are Your Friends -esque tropes (sorry, Zac Efron). The fact that Elba plays more of an amateur producer also helps to ground the series, as watchers are just as likely to be confused by phrases like “stack that layer” as his character is. Belgian duo Vijay & Sofia are back with a brand new single, “ Aquadrops ” that is yet another gem in their catalogue. Peekaboo is easily one of the fastest growing artists in bass music right now. With social engagement that’s off the charts and a unique sound and brand that appeals to everyone, it’s easy to see how. In 2018, Peekaboo dropped two EPs and one of the most viral bass tracks of the year, “Babatunde,” with G-REX. Now well into 2019, he’s announced his  Wrecking Ball  EP, due out next Friday, March 8, on Deadbeats. With no singles out yet in 2019, it seems this EP will be entirely new and original music, something that’s a bit of a rarity these days. Avicii touched the lives of nearly every single person in the EDM community. Even in death, his legacy lives on — and the video below is an excellent representation of his lasting impression on dance culture. Recently, the producer was honored with a posthumous award at the Grammy Gala known as Grammisgalan in Sweden. His father, Klaus Bergling, proudly accepted on his son’s behalf and spoke about the man behind the music, Tim Bergling. “When it came to the music, he was on the verge of obsessed to reach the optimal he had imagined,” Klaus recounted. “It could be demanding for many who worked with him. He was a shy person who didn’t want to be in the center and he had a hard time with the official role. Bring Me The Horizon’s 2013 album  Sempiternal  was a massive hit, with tracks like “Shadow Moses” and “Sleepwalking” garnering tens of millions of plays alone. And with the release of their latest album  amo and accompanying tour, all of the emo kids who now listen to dance music felt a renewed connection with the band. The album begins with the anthemic “Can You Feel My Heart,” which has just been reimagined by Varien with help from Andrew Zink. This new version stays very close to the original, only with updated vocals and cleaner, more refined production. The original, though beloved, and even released as recently as 2013, still sounds horribly dated in comparison to Varien’s highly mastered take. There are some slight differences in the overall arrangement as well — note the absence of the acoustic guitar in the verse at 1:24 in the cover versus the original. Few artists can claim the same importance of either Kraftwerk or Daft Punk in bringing electronic music to the masses and popularizing it beyond just the dark warehouses of the underground rave days. Between Kraftwerk’s iconic synthesizer style and live shows, and Daft Punk’s contribution to stage design, aesthetic, and branding, the two paved the way for many of today’s top DJs and producers. Now, the two are set to be featured in a new exhibit at the Paris Philharmonic in France, held April 9- August 11. Daft Punk’s exhibition will revolve around the legendary duo’s 2005 hit song “Technologic,” in a setting conceptualized by Thomas Banglater and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo themselves. A select few things about the scene, however, have weathered the various changes and emerged as pillars of the drum and bass community to become DnB institutions. Even fewer of those institutions exist in the U.S. scene, and LA’s weekly Thursday club Respect is by far the most well-known. In a special event this Friday, Respect will be sharing its 20th birthday with another drum and bass institution, Virus Recordings, who’s also turning twenty. “NËU” means new in German, so pardon us for using that international pun almost every time Misanthrop and Phaces’s bespoke offshoot of Neosignal drops another release, but it is both true and fun. NËU008 just dropped today with two singles from Proxima, “Odd One” and “Jumpy” and they definitely have a different, “NËU” feel to them (OK, stopping now). NËU does its own premieres for the little vignette singles it’s been releasing since late 2017 but since every release almost certainly contains at least one dancefloor banger and one chin-scratcher (sometimes both), so we like to feature them here at YEDM anyway. Unsurprisingly, Proxima’s offering ticks both boxes, with “Odd One” and “Jumpy” being both dancefloor stinkers and interesting mindbenders. “Odd One” seems to be the best of all world, with a creeps, cinematic opening which launches into a bassface-inducing yet minimal and steppy drum loop with lots of darkstep synth ornamentation. Fans of Whipped Cream and Zhu have known this one was coming for a while now, and the day is finally here that we can all hear her official remix of “Desert Woman,” from Zhu’s latest album  RINGOS DESERT . Zhu’s sophomore album was named Your EDM’s #6 album of 2018 , so it’s clear we already hold the original in pretty high regard. That being said, Whipped Cream’s new look at the track is some of the most original bass music we’ve heard recently. It’s almost as if the track’s rhythm is directly parallel to her own iconic movements on stage, bouncing to and fro. The remix begins with almost Zedd-like melodies accompanied by the original vocals, modified and stretched to create an almost otherworldly feeling of suspense. Fresh off last year’s critically acclaimed Shades album In Praise of Darkness , Eprom has shifted focus back on his solo project with a forthcoming EP on Deadbeats due early this summer. “The Cat” is the first single off the Aikon EP, and I can safely say it is unlike any other track you will hear this year. Imagine Rusko’s wobble sound stripped down to its barest form, hardly any melody — just drums, and synths. Imagine that, and maybe you’ll get halfway to the reality of “The Cat.” The true nature of the track is hard to pin down. Between the innocuous track title, the otherworldly track art, and the mind boggling sound of the track itself, it’s hard to say just what Eprom had in mind here. “The Cat” definitely isn’t a track you can dance to. And with so much empty space in the track, it’s hard to even think of an appropriate lighting sequence for a live show. And yet, it’s addictive. Just this Monday, Dillon Francis teased a new collaboration with TV Noise that was intended to “make fun of people who make fun of dance music and all drops in dance music right now.” The idea was that the drop would change every four bars, playing off the variety of common drop tropes present in today’s EDM club climate. Out today is that track, “EDM O’ CLOCK.” And while it doesn’t quite live up to the expectations I had for it, it still gets the job done. The track  does change the drop every four bars, but there is definitely a core melody and bassline that Dillon and TV Noise return to after each alternating switch up. So while it isn’t an  entirely new drop every four bars, technically, Dillon wasn’t lying. The track is frightfully short, clocking in just under 2m30s — but considering the nature of the track, that’s not entirely surprising. On January 21, 2019, a woman named Jasmine Eiland live streamed her own apparent rape at Opera Nightclub in Atlanta. 34-year-old Dominique Williams turned himself in at the Fulton County Jail on Jan. 29, but a week ago, it was confirmed that Eiland had filed a lawsuit against her alleged attacker as well as the nightclub itself. In the process of investigating Eiland’s claim, the local CBS affiliate news station discovered that three other sexual assaults had been reported at Opera over the last two years. According to police reports, in March 2017, a woman was allegedly “fondled by several males at Club Opera while she was unconscious. In November of the same year, another incident report details at attempted PIV rape that was ultimately “unsuccessful” — that woman also alleges she was robbed. Deadmau5’s  4×4=12 was, still is, a phenomenal album. It showed an evolution in his sound as well as being the album alongside which his legendary cube was debuted at Coachella in 2010. Among the album tracks, “Raise Your Weapon” remains one of the most lauded, not least of all because it was co-written by Skrillex. Now in 2019, the track gets reimagined by a new breed of helmeted producer,  KLOUD . KLOUD’s interpretation is also a slow burner, but the wick is a lot shorter, and instead of a wax candle, it’s a stick of dynamite. The drop is far more bombastic than its original cousin, employing harsh electro synths and pounding drums, rather than understated bass and simple drums. The vocal in KLOUD’s version gets more of a filter throughout the drop, but the effect hardly makes a dent where the intent of the original is concerned. In 2019, we express ourselves through emojis. However, there’s currently a void for dance music lovers that only a disco ball can possibly fill. A new Change.org  petition started up by Glitterbox calls on the house and disco community to champion the “vital” addition of a disco ball to the emoji keyboard. “The centrepiece of any great party, this is one of the most-loved objects for all dancefloor lovers.” The disco ball has potential to brighten someone’s day, kick-start the weekend, or even signal a function from your favorite DJ. As the campaign points out, “There is a party popper, a confetti ball and a balloon emoji, but no disco ball.” Emojipedia has already revealed the 230  new emojis coming in 2019. Dillon Francis and Alison Wonderland dropped their collab “Lost My Mind” a month ago, and also just wrapped up their co-headlining tour. Yet, keeping the track alive with a new remix is none other than WILDLYF , who brings a new spin to the tune. The original “Lost My Mind” was already a dirty, textured midtempo tune. WILDLYF keeps a lot of that same vibe but also introduces a bit of a feint just ahead of the drop. It sounds like it’s about to go minimal trap and then just descends into his characteristic pure chaos. It’s a brilliant rendition of the track, keeping the soul intact and working on the outward appearance, so to speak. It’s as if WILDLYF possessed the original and turned it into his own puppet. Yesterday, February 25,  SoundCloud users experienced difficulty accessing the platform as the streaming service was down for approximately an hour in the middle of the afternoon. Trying to play any song, or look at user profiles, was met with an error message and a “Retry” button. The service resumed normally later. Today, SoundCloud went down again at approximately the same time in the afternoon, if not a little earlier, with users experiencing similar symptoms of yesterday’s outage. It is currently back up after being inaccessible for around 30-45 mins. Your EDM has reached out to a representative for SoundCloud asking for a reason for the outages, and are awaiting a response. Daft Punk made their album debut with  Homework in 1997, but it wasn’t until 2001’s  Discovery that they truly made a splash on the electronic music scene worldwide. Tracks like “Da Funk,” “Oh Yeah,” and “Around The World” on their first album set the stage, and pretty much every track on  Discovery then brought it home. You’d be hard pressed to find any electronic music fan, or music fan in general for that matter, who doesn’t know “One More Time” or “Harder Better Faster Stronger.” Then, of course, there are the ominous bell tolls on “Aerodynamic” and the delicate pairing of acoustic guitar and vocoder on “Digital Love.” For my own tastes, I truly love “Crescendolls,” but “Voyager” and “Face to Face” also have their own appeal. Diplo appears in the new Detective Pikachu movie! His cameo is revealed in the latest official trailer. Given the DJ/producer is stationed behind the DJ booth in the split-second clip, he’s already in character for the role. He appears doing what he does best — setting the scene for the party. The extent of Diplo’s part is unclear at this point, but it’s certainly a cameo worth noting. It’s a particularly interesting exchange considering Pikachu made a cameo in Jack Ü ‘s music video “Where Are Ü Now” featuring Justin Bieber  in 2015. You would have easily missed it if you blinked. Pokémon’s Detective Pikachu  hits theaters on May 10, 2019. With Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu, this film already has some major star power behind it.
