David Schoenwetter is an installation in the upper echelons of music production for 10 years running, having done engineering on countless big-name artists like Mikey Cyrus, The Scissor Sisters, The Jonas Brothers, Norah Jones, Yoko Ono and Donald Fagen (of Steely Dan). He’s also had engineering and production credits with almost every major television and media network. His pedigree is massive in the field but he’s also had a number of his own musical projects, where his musical style is on the pop side of EDM or the EDM side of pop. This is where his new project, INViDA comes in. With only two tracks out thus far and knowing his incredible musical production range, it’s hard to fully speculate what INViDA’s style will be. Some unfortunate news is coming out of the Mexican city of San Luis Potosi. Psytrance DJ  Perplex has been murdered by multiple gunmen who opened fire at a crowded dance music club early on Saturday. Real name Ronen Dahan, the 45 year-old DJ was one of two victims who died as a result of the attack. Several others were also injured. While motive remains unclear and the gunmen remain on the loose, fellow DJ  Faders is raising money to have his body transported back to his home in Israel. Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” is one of those classics that, even if you don’t know who sings it or what the song is called, you know the song inside an out. It’s been played on radio stations for decades (the album will celebrate its 40th anniversary this year) to the point that even just snippet will be enough to trigger recognition. Now, Alok and Sevenn have taken the classic and re-tooled it for the dance floor with a modern twist. However, what originally sounds like a sample is actually a complete recreation. Whitney Houston died February 11, 2012, leaving behind a lifetime legacy and, apparently, some new music for the future. Out today, seven years after her death, is a new collaboration with Kygo using her cover of Steve Winwood’s 1986 hit, “Higher Love.” As Kygo explained in a social post yesterday, Houston performed a cover of the song back in 1990 during her Feels So Right Tour in Japan and re-recorded the song a year later. Though it had been intended for her third studio album,  I’m Your Baby Tonight , Houston’s version was never officially released save for as a Japan-only bonus track on the album. “I’m incredibly honored to have been able to work on this amazing vocal from one of the most legendary artists of all time!” Kygo wrote on social media. “Hope you guys love it as much as I do.” The track has the familiar Kygo sound that he’s become known for, using a bright and poppy melody with a piano-driven lead and infectious horns. As one of the pre-eminent artists during the rise of future bass, along with Flume, Lido, Vindata and others, his technical ability and skill at writing melodies are among the cream of the crop. Now, two years since his last years, he returns with “AUTO,” a brilliant demonstration that he hasn’t lost his touch. It has the sort of vocal fx of a Trippy Turtle song with the live instrumentation of Lido or San Holo and the melody all his own. French police are under fire after they broke up a rave in Nantes last week, resulting in the disappearance of one man and video evidence showing excessive violence toward revelers. The free techno party was organised as part of France’s Fête de la Musique (Music Day). The annual event encourages people to play music in public places every 21 June. According to reports , “at around 4:30 a.m., some 20 officers from the Anti-Crime Brigade (BAC) and riot police were dispatched to stop the festivities, which had been authorized to conclude half an hour earlier, at 4:00 a.m.” Event organizers complied with police initially, turning off the music. However, apparently as soon as police left, music resumed and that’s when things took a turn for the worse. Police returned equipped with tear gas, stun grenades, rubber bullets, and attack dogs. Now in the lead up to the album’s release, Illenium is playing plenty of shows and festivals and keeping the hype momentum going, especially when he teases unreleased music from the project. He played in Tokyo, Japan last night and gifted the crowd with an unreleased tune, which he shared on his Instagram story. In a perfect world, by the day a festival is set to begin, it should essentially be on autopilot (for the most part). The groundwork should be laid, the employees should know their roles, the artists should be paid and have their flights, etc., etc. In a worst case scenario, a festival knows they won’t be able to put on a proper show and bows out at a reasonable time and refunds those who’ve bought tickets. And then there’s VestiVille . The Belgium music festival, which featured Cardi B, Future, Meek Mill and Jason Derulo on its lineup, abruptly cancelled the entire event the day it was scheduled to begin. According to tweets from the festival, the mayor apparently suddenly decided not to let it go on. Today at 5:00 PM the mayor of Lommel decided to not let Vestiville start. However, out of the darkness shines a light (pun intended) in the form of San’s friend Alison Wonderland . For anyone to say, categorically, that they’re not into “xxxxx” genre is effectively closing yourself off to a plethora of great music. For any genre, there is a spectrum of material that goes from hard to soft, traditional to experimental. I’ve always been pretty far removed from the traditional techno sound, but the mau5trap variety has always appealed to me — somehow, I just find it more accessible. To his credit,  C.H.A.Y. has found a happy medium that gets me excited about techno and also ready to explore the deeper side of the genre. C.H.A.Y.’s new EP Travel Far out on mau5trap spans four tracks and 22 minutes of glorious techno goodies. The first and title track is nearly 9 minutes and sets a good tone for the EP as a whole. The poppy synths and pounding kicks are right in tune with his core sound and the heavy bass sounds incredible even with your speakers turned all the way up. As G Jones teases fans of new music on its way, one of our most anticipated releases has just hit streaming services and it’s going to be on repeat for us all day. Yes — we’re talking about the RL Grime edit of his hit “In Your Head” from his debut album  The Ineffable Truth . Since it’s an edit, it’s not  that much different from the original. That being said, it’s akin to RL Grime taking an already, almost impossibly perfect meal and augmenting it with perhaps an appropriate sauce, or even adding a sprinkling of some special homemade seasoning. The last person we’d expect to release a new dance track on this New Music Friday is Céline Dion … and yet here we are. That being said, pop and electronic music have been becoming more and more muddled, the lines blurred ever further, over the past few years. So, this kind of production isn’t  entirely a shock, especially as the singer has been spotted hanging out with producers like Steve Aoki as of late. Today, she’s come out with a new track called “Flying On My Own” that calls back to classic house/trance songs of the early 2000s. Dion’s vocals pair perfectly with the stadium-sized synths and huge melody; despite the song’s unexpected origins, this is undoubtedly a banger. Every single year, myself and a couple friends pack up our things and make the drive down to George, WA for  USC Events ‘  Paradiso festival. When the festival comes to an end, we pack up once again and head home, talking about our plans for coming back to the Gorge next year. Looking back on it, why exactly this has become an annual tradition is a bit of a mystery. Is it the breathtaking sight of the Gorge? Or maybe it’s the thrill of breaking free of life’s monotonous cycle to camp in the middle of nowhere? Or perhaps it’s for the pure love of electronic music?
