There’s currently no dance music spectacle greater or more iconic than Eric Prydz ‘s  HOLO show — and now you can experience the full thing in stunning HD from anywhere. We’re in the final hours of 2019, and Nitti Gritti and FuntCase just  had to do it to em one last time. Nitti is a fantastic chameleon in the studio, able to materialize anything he can possibly think up, and FuntCase is the legendary dubstep producer that he is. When the two get in the studio together, they arrive at “To Death.” A lot of this track sounds like old school Never Say Die vibes, with harrowing synths, a tinge of melody, and some seriously aggressive bass. But at the end of the day, it still showcases the talents and sounds of both artists brilliantly, with a unique spin and recognizable clarity in production. As we reach the end of this decade, there’s perhaps no more important topic to examine than the rise of EDM. Not the genre, not even really the term, more so how the term has been warped into a specific genre after years of pushing back against it and trying to differentiate from it. One of the most popular arguments against “EDM” is that it stands for the cookie-cutter bullshit you hear on syndicated radio (i.e., The Chainsmokers, Zedd, Marshmello) and main stages (i.e., David Guetta, Afrojack, The Chainsmokers again…). On the other side of the coin, the rather logical argument that EDM literally stands for “electronic dance music” and is meant as an umbrella/catch-all term for genres under that distinction. Coachella ‘s 2020 lineup is shaping up to be phenomenal! According to inside sources, Frank Ocean and Travis Scott will join Rage Against the Machine as headliners for the iconic music festival over two weekends in Indio, California. This leaked announce, confirmed via Consequence of Sound , is in line with an  earlier report declaring the same three headliners. These industry sources also list  My Chemical Romance , Radiohead frontman  Thom Yorke , Lana Del Rey , and Flume  as part of the 2020 lineup. Considering MCR just reunited, a Coachella appearance is rather opportune. The touring/promotion schedules for the other artists make sense, too. Coachella has yet to make an official announcement — but best believe it’s coming soon. The Coachella lineup historically is announced the first couple days of January. A lot can be said about the accuracy of Billboard’s charting data – lord knows its Rock charts have already earned their fair share of scorn this week. But the Dance/Electronic songs chart, which only began in 2013 in the first place, is a pretty damn accurate representation of hits in our scene. It’s important to note that virality doesn’t exactly mean you’ll top the charts, or we’d see Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” in the top 10 (it comes in at #47); that’s especially true considering the difference between the Vine era and the current TikTok era and how the platforms treat content creators. When you look back at the last decade, there are only a handful or true hitmakers that found success outside of the borders of EDM, and they’re all represented in the top 10 — Marshmello, The Chainsmokers, Skrillex, Diplo, Zedd, Avicii, and DJ Snake. It’s the end of an era as music streaming service 8tracks announces its difficult decision to shut down after 11 years running. The platform, which centers around user-generated playlists consisting of at least 8 tracks, has released an official statement. 8tracks takes us through the platform’s history, from early beginnings to its imminent shut down, and the reasoning behind it all. Ultimately, shifts in the music industry have made it difficult for 8tracks to stay afloat. The blog post states: To state it simply, we’re shutting down because we can’t generate enough revenue, at our current scale, to cover royalties that continue to increase. One could blame “the music industry” for the travails of 8tracks — the path to the grave has been well trodden by many digital music startups these last 20 years . Kanye West ‘s ongoing court battle with EMI continues … Earlier this year, the hip hop star sued his own publishing company, claiming their demanding contracts amounted to “ servitude .” EMI rebutted, arguing that California’s “servitude” law didn’t apply to the New York-based deal. A judge determined they should settle outside of court, but that hasn’t happened. According to TMZ , EMI’s request to reopen the case has been signed off by the judge. New filings on the case state, “unfortunately the parties have been unable to finalize the terms of the settlement agreement.” The original contract put in place by EMI said  West must “remain actively involved in writing, recording and producing Compositions and Major Label Albums, as Your principle occupation.” The agreement also stated “at no time during the Term” will Kanye initiate a retirement or extended hiatus. Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-Church of Social Justice) of South Bend, Indiana reiterated his radical drug policy on Friday, calling for decriminalization of all drugs — including meth, cocaine and ecstasy — not just marijuana. MDL Beast Festival took place over the weekend with high profile  B2B sets to attract the masses — but the event hasn’t come and gone without some major controversy. Instagram influencers and publications are receiving backlash for promoting the Saudi Arabian dance music event. MDL Beast followed through like a typical EDM festival. However, some believe the country uses events like this to put a bandaid on its troubling stance on human rights. Following the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Ahmad Khashoggi in 2018, the country reportedly invested close to $3 billion in entertainment to attract tourists back to the area. Similar events have reportedly paid out artists up to six times more than usual to perform in the country. The funk master transformed Lizzo ‘s iconic feel-good, self-care anthem “Good As Hell” into a bass heavy crowd pleaser. Being that uplifting music is his forte, the unreleased remix fit right into his setlist. Not only did “Good As Hell” make a great first impression, some attendees even dubbed it the “theme of the night.” GRiZ himself called it a “vibe” in the top video below.
