Back in 2017, evidence emerged that Apple had been using software updates to limit the performance of older iPhones in an attempt to encourage users to upgrade their devices. The updates had a lot to do with the hardware capacity of the older phones, but lack of consent from users was the main focus of the controversy. Apple admitted that the updates were in an attempt to save the phones’ battery life, but that didn’t stop lawsuits in California and Illinois from being brought forward. Over in France , Apple was  facing a criminal probe following multiple complaints, and a preliminary investigation began in early 2018. Now, France’s Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention ( DGCCRF ) has determined that Apple’s initial lack of transparency breached its guidelines, and fined it €25 million euro ($41 million). “The DGCCRF has indeed shown that iPhone owners had not been informed that the updates of the iOS operating system (10.2.1 and 11.2) they

Tidal ‘s latest reported global revenues jumped to $148 million in 2018, but no thanks to the United States. According to new documents filed at UK Companies House, the platform’s parent company  Project Panther Bidco grew 26.4% year-over-year to $147.6 million in 2018. However, revenue dropped 19.7% in the U.S. from $71.5 million in 2017 to $57.4 million that same year. Overall, the company saw a profit of $44.7 million in 2018. With 60 million songs and 250,000 videos streaming in high quality, and often times exclusive audio/visual content, Tidal attributes 97.7% of its revenue to direct subscriptions. The financial docs state: “the Group continues to invest in technological and marketing platforms, with significant enhancements to its product in the form of new user-friendly features (such as algorithmic mixes), new advanced sound capabilities and expanded performance-based growth and retention marketing.” Tidal was founded in 2014 by Jay-Z . Avicii’s posthumous album  TIM was released last year, following his death in April 2018. In recognition of the album, it was awarded two Grammis (the equivalent of the GRAMMYs in Sweden): Song of the year for “SOS” feat. Aloe Blacc and Best Electro/Dance of the year for the album,  TIM . Carl Falk shared the news on social media, stating, “Congrats everyone involved for receiving two Swedish Grammys for the album Tim. We worked hard all of us and the smile on Klas face says it all. Every year since 2002, with the sole exception of 2006, Tiësto has played Ultra Music Festival in Miami. Only one other DJ can match his number of appearances at the festival, Carl Cox, but it’s tough to say anyone else has had the impact on the legacy of the festival that Tiësto has. Now, for the first time in 13 years, and only the second time since 2002, Tiësto will not be on the lineup this year. The DJ confirmed he will not appear in the final phase of the festival lineup in the comments on his most recent post on Instagram. Porter Robinson is taking a moment today to remember an artist dear to his heart, Qing Han aka  Qinni . In December 2019, Qinni informed her followers in a post on social media that she’d been diagnosed with stage IV cancer. A man was caught trying to bring in over 1,000 MDMA capsules to  Transmission Music Festival in Sydney, (not to be confused with Transmission Festival in Prague), according to a new report . Of the six people charged with drug supply, this one man singlehandedly brought in enough MDMA to offer 1 in every 12 people at the festival. A 19-year-old was caught with 287 MDMA pills, a 31-year-old with 195 MDMA pills, and an 18-year-old woman allegedly concealed 180 MDMA pills internally. 32 others were processed for drug possession. Despite these charges, the crowd of 12,000 people was generally described as “well-behaved.” On Friday night, police reportedly seized a total of 2,000 MDMA capsules, an undisclosed amount of LSD, and a knife from the festival at Sydney Olympic Park. deadmau5 has been testing out a new stunner of an ID — and thankfully, this unreleased goodness has been captured on camera. While the vast majority of material featured in the  cube v3 show is familiar to the audience, this elusive ID remains a complete mystery. According to Reddit, deadmau5 did mention on one of his tour stops that it’s finished, so hopefully we’ll get an official release sooner than later. Now, he has drastically one upped himself by making an entire DAW (digital audio workstation) with the same software. Plus, the xlStudio program has the ability to export to .als files, which are compatible with  Ableton Live . Yesterday, fans were elated with the news of a new Purity Ring album due out in 2020. Didn’t hear about it? The news was delivered exclusively to the duo’s private Discord channel along with the first single from the album. WOMB will release this year, the group’s first album since 2015’s  another eternity . As if EDC Las Vegas couldn’t get any bigger, it’s actually expanding in 2020 to make use of the full speedway for the first time ever! Confused? We wouldn’t blame you. According to Insomniac founder and CEO Pasquale Rotella in social media posts announcing the expansion, the festival have been blocked by RV hookups that have made many areas of the festival space unusable. There are hundreds of these suckers sticking up everywhere in the worst spots at the Speedway, making those areas unusable. I’ve wanted to get rid of them since we moved EDC to Vegas 10 years ago! Well… they’re FINALLY getting taken out, and for the first time ever we’ll be using the ENTIRE Speedway for EDC Las Vegas 2020. The removal of these pesky hookups means expanded room at neonGARDEN and quantumVALLEY, and more space around pixelFOREST. Let’s just say this right now: I cannot overstate how excited I am for Apashe’s next album,  Renaissance . And you should be, too. After starting things off with “Distance” at the end of 2019, he released the overwhelmingly Russian collab, “Uebok (Gotta Run)” just a couple weeks ago. Now, he’s back with probably the biggest collab of his career, enlisting the help of Tech N9ne on “Insane.” The track title is indicative of the track itself, combining Tech N9ne’s already-crazy musical style with Apashe’s unique blend of classical and bass music. The result is an off-kilter bass/hip hop hybrid that is as horrifying as it is sonically impressive. Through all the various stages of the track, it just gets more and more wild. We all know Ray Volpe , right? I suppose that’s a bit of a generalized statement, but at this point, I don’t think it’s that far off. Whether you’re hearing one of a dozen flips of “Wet Napkin” or watching him on social media doing his best to get crowds to engage with his “Behemoth” x “Swing” edit, you know the dude. Yesterday, he dropped four wild VIPs to a few of his biggest tracks, including “Wet Napkin” and “Programmed to Love.” As VIPs, there’s not a  whole lot different about these at the core level. But for those who have streamed these songs tens or dozens of times, they’re sure to find both the surface level and more subtle differences exhilarating as they breathe new life into these modern-day classics. Whethan is continuing the rollout of his debut album  FANTASY with the new single, “All In My Head” with grandson. Having already released “ Stay Forever ” with STRFKR, we’re beginning to get a clearer picture of what this project is going to sound like, and we have to admit, we like it. What we’re seeing is definitely a shift away from EDM and more toward indie and rock. With the new collab with grandson, “All In My Head,” we’re getting that even more. Tasty guitar riffs and filtered vocals, with a funky bassline and rock drum rhythm give it a multilayered feel that ties in electronic production with what is ostensibly a rock song. FANTASY still has no official release date, but with select tour dates beginning after Ultra, we’re probably looking at either March 20 or 27.
